MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Senator Bill Ketron and Representative Mike Sparks, both graduates of Middle Tennessee, were on hand in Murphy Center today to present a resolution to Middle Tennessee men's basketball head coach Kermit Davis and the Blue Raiders in recognition of the team's success during the 2012-13 campaign. MT President Sidney McPhee and Director of Athletics Chris Massaro joined in the ceremony.
"We have some Senators from Memphis and some from Knoxville, and we wanted to make sure that we stood up and cheered for the Blue Raiders on the day we passed this resolution," Senator Ketron said. "You guys represent us so well, not just across the state, but across the country as well, and you bring that recognition to our university. We are very proud of what you do."
Senate Joint Resolution No. 336, adopted on April 17, states "from time to time, the members of this General Assembly pause in their deliberations to recognize those teams which, through their commitment to the pursuit of excellence both on and off the court, have brought honor to themselves, their schools, their communities and this State."
The resolution goes on to list several of the Blue Raiders' achievements from last season, among them MT's 28 wins, 19 conference wins and 11 road wins as program records and 17-game winning streak, the nation's longest at the time. Additionally, the resolution highlighted Davis becoming the Sun Belt's all-time winningest coach, the team's at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, MT's climb to No. 26 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and all of the postseason conference accolades, including Davis earning the league's coach of the year award for the second straight year.
"Head coaches get awards because of a good staff, great assistant coaches, really good players, a great fan base, an outstanding AD and a very supportive president," Davis said.
In closing, the resolution stated that "the MTSU Blue Raiders basketball program has thrilled and inspired us throughout this most recent season, and it is fitting that this body recognizes the team's dedication to success, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of excellence, both in basketball and in life."
"As president of this university, I am really proud of the academic standard that you have not only set, but that you have maintained each year," said McPhee, who also received his conference championship ring during the ceremony. "I want to congratulate Coach Davis and his staff for making sure that each of you ends up with a degree in your hands when you leave this campus."
The resolution is signed by Senator Ketron, Speaker of the Senate Ron Ramsey, Speaker of the House of Representatives Beth Harwell and Governor Bill Haslam.
