Stockstill has mixed reviews after first week of practice
First scrimmage set for Saturday nightAugust 9, 2013 · @MTAthletics
MURFREESBORO - Middle Tennessee wrapped up its first full week of practice on Friday with mixed reviews from Head Coach Rick Stockstill.
The Blue Raiders went through the NCAA mandated five-day acclimation period before recently jumping into two-a-days. The teams first fall scrimmage is set for Saturday night inside Floyd Stadium.
"We have had some good areas of practice and some that fell below my expectations," said Stockstill. "We were a little sluggish the first few days, then picked it up in the middle but our last two days have been disappointing, especially Thursday's practice. Thursday was just a waisted day with no intensity.
"The team is tired but everyone in the country is tired and they have to overcome that. We are not where we want to be so the next 20 days will be very important."
The Blue Raiders, coming off an 8-4 season, open the 2013 campaign on August 29th at home against Western Carolina. In preparation for the opener, Middle Tennessee will hold its first fall scrimmage Saturday night under the lights of Floyd Stadium.
The 90-100-play scrimmage will go a long way in defining the first week of drills and what the coaches will concentrate on in the week ahead.
"I want to see the first two units execute what we have installed the first week," added Stockstill. "The offense needs to protect the football and not have careless mistakes and penalties. Defensively, I want to see how we tackle because it's usually not very good in the first scrimmage."
Notes: Former players Lebron Elder and Wes Counts attended the morning practice ... At the end of practice, the Blue Raiders worked on their hurry-up offense with Logan Kilgore directing a 40-second drive that ended with a Cody Clark 44-yard FG. Kilgore was a perfect 3-for-3 ... Stockstill on Clark: "Cody is our kicker right now and he hit it well today." ... Redshirt freshman Josh Chester has impressed coaches with his play at center ... Newcomer Jahmal Jones has reported to camp and receiver Ed'Marques Batties is expected to join the team in the next few days ... The Saturday scrimmage will be practice No. 11 of fall camp.
Middle Tennessee's annual Fan Day is set for this Sunday on the floor of Murphy Center from 2-4 PM. Autographs, inflatables, free hotdogs and drinks, and loads of fun will be on hand for all members of the Blue Raider family. Bring your kids and friends to get them ready for the 2013 football season.
