MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee completed its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday at Floyd Stadium as the team went 101 total plays. The Blue Raider offense racked up 359 total yards, while the defense strung together 11 consecutive stops.
"It was just an average scrimmage," said head coach Rick Stockstill. "The offense had some success early, and then the defense responded with a few stops. I thought on offense we ran the ball well but our pass protection let us down. Defensively, I thought we tackled well for a first scrimmage and did a nice job of applying pressure. We have a long way to go but it has only been one week."
Signal-caller Logan Kilgore opened the scrimmage by marching the offense 70 yards for a touchdown that was capped off with a Jordan Parker three-yard run. Just a few moments later, Marcus Henry leaped high in the air for an acrobatic 10-yard touchdown reception from backup Austin Grammer.
Defensive pressure escalated, as the men in white forced 11 straight stops. Among those plays included a strong-willed sack from Atlanta's Dearco Nolan. The defensive end completed the day with a team-best six stops and two sacks.
Hoping to give momentum back to the offense, Parker broke loose for a strong 19-yard run. But once again the defense buckled up and fought back as redshirt sophomore Kevin Byard slid in front of a receiver for an interception. The offense snapped its' scoreless skid when tailback William Pratcher scampered in for a one-yard touchdown.
Grammer connected on his second touchdown of the day, finding true freshman Shannon Smith with a 23-yard strike. Grammer, a redshirt freshman, finished Saturday's contest 8-of-17 for 74 yards and two touchdowns.
Veteran kicker Cody Clark made the only field goal of the day with his 38-yard attempt.
Parker finished the scrimmage with a three-yard touchdown, as he completed the day with 52 yards and a pair of scores.
On the offensive side, Kilgore went 9-of-19 for 77 yards and an interception. Christian Collis had two receptions for 24 yards, while Henry finished the day with three grabs and 24 yards. Pratcher led the running back corps with 73 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
Defensively, T.T. Barber and Xavier Walker each recorded five stops. Walker also picked up the second interception of the day for the defense. Khari Burke posted a pair of tackles for loss with four stops.
