Middle Tennessee Soccer alum Shan Jones was named the W-League's Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year for the 2013 season.

Jones led the league with 11 goals and 24 points in 11 games for the Virginia Beach Piranahs. She helped the Piranhas (10-1-1) to the W-League's regular season title and the top overall seed for the playoffs. Virginia Beach fell 2-1 to the Washington Spirit Reserves in the opening round of the playoffs.

In addition to her individual awards, Jones was named to the All-Northeastern Conference team for her outstanding performance this summer.

The W-League is the first and longest-standing women's soccer league in North America. The 2013 W-League campaign featured 25 teams in three regional conferences playing 10-12 regular season matches. The league is recognized throughout the world for providing superior competition for female players, while offering affordable family entertainment for fans throughout North America.

"I'm really happy for Shan and the awards she has won," said head coach Aston Rhoden. "It's always great to see your former players continue in the sport after completing their collegiate careers. Shan continues to represent our university and soccer program in a positive manner and I'm confident she will do well as she begins her pro career in Austria."

Jones has shifted her professional efforts to Austria, where she recently joined LUV Graz in the OFB Women's League.

Earlier this year, Jones represented her country of Wales in the prestigious Algarve Cup. The 2012 graduate finished her outstanding Middle Tennessee career with 32 goals, 75 points and 12 game winners during her tenure - all ranking in the top 10 in program history.

Jones, a native of Y Felinheli, Wales also earned preseason All-Sun Belt honors and third team NSCAA All-South Region accolades during her tenure with the Blue Raiders. She was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, along with a first team All-Sun Belt selection in 2008.
