Blue Raiders hold kicking scrimmage
Two-a-days come to an end todayAugust 14, 2013 · @MTAthletics
For Observers: Ideal, sunny, low humidity, very October-like
For Coaches: Terrible ... They want it hot
Observations: Former DT and current GA Dwight Smith continued to showcase his strong throwing arm as he tossed 60-yard passes with ease ... Coach Stockstill to Kickoff Return Team: "Do not block anyone in the back" ... Freshman placekicker Canon Rooker routinely put kickoffs into the endzone ... There is constant teaching going on by the coaches, they never let up ... Leighton Gasque made a nice interception during 7-on-7 ... In a span of four plays during 7-on-7, Logan Kilgore threw two touchdown passes to Marcus Henry and a third to Terry Pettis ... During the kicking scrimmage, the offensive line and defensive line got in a lot of individual work ... Observers continue to be impressed with the group of running backs displayed by the Blue Raiders.
Noteworthy: Emphasis today was on special teams as the Raiders held a kicking scrimmage ... Punter Josh Davis hit the ball well as did placekickers Cody Clark and Canon Rooker ... Safety Anfornee Stewart still worked on the sideline with strength coach Jason Spray ... WR Kyle Griswould was limited ... New Orleans Saints scout attended practice ... Officials were on hand to work all of practice ... Former placekicker Carlos Lopez, who will sign with Arena League's Tampa Bay Storm next week, stopped by practice ... Campetition today ended in a tie between the offense and defense ... With four starters returning to an offensive line that finished second nationally in fewest sacks allowed the one open spot has been secured by a redshirt freshman. Josh Chester, out of Warner Robins, GA, is currently tops on the depth chart at center.
Coach Stockstill on Today's Kicking Scrimmage: "We had a really good scrimmage, a lot better than last week's. We did a good job of covering and protecting in the punting game and our field goal block was executed well. We were able to get a lot of pressure on the kicker. The only disappointing area was in our short punt session because we put them all in the endzone and did not give our gunners a chance to cover them in the field of play."
2-A-Days End: Today's morning workout was officially the half-way point of preseason camp and the NCAA allowed 29 practices. The morning practice was No. 15 with the 16th set for later tonight beginning at 7:45 PM. This will end two-a-day practices for fall camp.
