IRVING, Texas - Middle Tennessee sophomore Rachel Shaughnessy was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week following a stellar first weekend of play, as announced by the conference office on Monday.

Shaughnessy led all competitors at the four-team Blue Raider Bash with 1.50 blocks per set. She had one of her best matches as a Blue Raider on Saturday vs. Notre Dame when she tallied a career-best 11 blocks in a four-set win over the Irish, a team receiving votes in the AVCA poll. Shaughnessy also recorded four blocks in a win over San Francisco on Friday, and three more against North Carolina - another ACC foe receiving votes - on Saturday night.

In addition to her blocking success, Shaughnessy notched 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage over the first weekend of play. The award is her first career player of the week, and Shaughnessy is the first Blue Raider in any sport to win a Conference USA player of the week award.

Middle Tennessee returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 6:00 p.m., when the Blue Raiders travel to Carbondale, Ill., to face Southern Illinois.
