MT travels to Chattanooga for PowerAde Invitational

Middle Tennessee looks to repeat 2012 performance

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the UTC PowerAde Invitational on Friday, Sept. 4.

The event is at Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga, Tenn., and will feature a 5k race for the men and two mile run for the women. The women's race will start at 5:45 p.m. EST with the men's race to follow at 6:15 p.m. EST. 

The MT men's team is the defending meet champions, taking home first place in 2012 after placing five runners in the top-10. Robinson Simatei finished the 5k course in 15:48.58 for a second-place finish, narrowly missing first by 16 seconds. 

Alden Dixon took home third place after running 16:00.8. Silas Taiget came in fifth with a time of 16:11.12 and Keith Davis was sixth with a time of 16:28.24. Lyle Haywood rounded out the top-10, posting a time of 16:28.24. 

Middle Tennessee tallied 26 points at last year's PowerAde Invitational, while the next closest team was UT Chattanooga with 32. 

The MT women's team took home second place in 2012 after three runners finished in the top-10. Autumn Gipson had the best time and place for the Blue Raiders, posting a 12:14.49 time for fourth in the two mile run.

Rachel Islam completed the course for eighth with a time of 12:26.67, while Julia Kitevski finished 10th with a time of 12:27.47. Tressanique Hampton had the fifth-best time for the Blue Raiders, posting a time of 13:23.86.

MT missed first place by 13 points as Chattanooga garnered top honors with 49 points, while the Blue Raiders finished with 62. 

Last week, Eliud Rutto claimed the best time for the Middle Tennessee men at the Belmont Invitational, finishing the course in 16:08.76 for 12th. Shadrack Matelong finished 16th with a time of 16:15.99. Rutto was named Conference USA Male Athlete of the Week for his performance. 

On the women's side, Jackline Kiprono completed the 5K course in 19:18.92 for 32nd. Gipson placed 55th with a time of 20:18.55.
