SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team received national recognition from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with Blue Raider players appearing in both the singles and doubles preseason ITA rankings, as announced by the ITA.
The pairing of senior Ben Davis and sophomore Victor Cornea rank No. 23 in the nation in doubles in the preseason rankings. The duo went 12-5 in doubles competition a year ago, including a 2-0 mark against nationally-ranked competitors.
Davis also appeared at No. 120 in the preseason singles rankings. The London native went 20-14 in singles competition in 2013, while playing exclusively at the No.1 singles position.
"For the first time since I have been here, we are being represented in both the singles and doubles preseason rankings, which is a great accomplishment," said head men's tennis coach Jimmy Borendame. "For Ben and Victor to be recognized as No. 23 shows they have some great potential to be an NCAA-caliber doubles team. Considering they have only played together for one semester they can get even better. As for Ben's singles rankings, we are happy he is on the Preseason Rankings but for where our program wants to go, we want to have two or three players on this list and Ben in the top 75 in the Final ITA rankings. We are already on the courts getting after it and getting better."
The Blue Raiders take to the courts this Saturday, Sept. 14, for the 27th Annual Wally Tidwell Pro-Am Presented by Farmers Insurance at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. The following weekend, play continues with the Dale Short Shootout in Murfreesboro, and the UVA Ranked Plus One in Charlottesville, Va.
