MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee cross country teams travel to Nashville, Tenn., to compete in the Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park on Sept. 14. The Percy Warner Park will feature an 8K event for the men, the first of the season, and a 5K trail for the women.
The Blue Raiders competed in the Commodore Classic last season and faced some difficult teams, placing 14th of 25 teams.
The men's squad had some success last week working on the 5k Moccasin Bend course at the UTC PowerAde Invitational as four runners finished in the top-10. Shadrack Matelong ran the best 5K performance of his young MT career, accomplishing the course in 15:43.26 for second.
Eliud Rutto followed his C-USA Runner of the Week honors with a fourth place finish and his best time of the year with 15:45.45.
Silas Taiget and Alden Dixon broke into the top-10 last week for the first time in 2013, finishing sixth and seventh with times of 15:58.02 and 16:00.90, respectively. Robinson Simatei finished 11th with a time of 16:30.26.
Simatei was a Middle Tennessee best 52nd with a time of 26:01.48 at the 2012 Commodore Classic, while Dixon finished 60th with a time of 26:07.39, good enough for a Blue Raider second-best.
Middle Tennessee women's team will look to pick up momentum going into its third event of 2013. Last week, the Blue Raiders finished third at the UTC PowerAde Invitational as freshman Jackline Kiprono led MT with a fourth-place finish, clocking in at 11:44.16 on the two-mile course.
Lucy Kapkiai made her first appearance in 2013 last week, placing seventh with a time of 11:58.01. Autumn Gipson and Julia Kitevski finished ninth and 14th with times of 12:03.08 and 12:17.22, respectively.
Kitevski was the highest finisher in last season's Commodore Classic, placing 104th with a time of 23:47.84, then a 6K event.
MT was originally scheduled to compete at the Georgia State Invitational on Sept. 21, but instead took the opportunity to compete closer to home in the Commodore Classic.
