MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team opens up its fall season this weekend when the Blue Raiders host the Dale Short Shootout at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center, Friday through Sunday. MT will host Lipscomb, Southern Illinois and UAB during the three-day event. The Blue Raiders will play at 1:30 each day.
"These teams will push us, allowing us to get the matches we need to make adjustments and improvements moving forward," said head men's tennis coach Jimmy Borendame. "I look forward to seeing how we'll compete as a team and what type of energy we'll bring. It's up to the upperclassmen to determine what kind of season they want to have, and that starts Friday."
The Blue Raiders are certainly not lacking in upperclassmen leadership, anchored by senior Ben Davis, who ranks No. 120 in the ITA preseason singles rankings. Davis is also ranked No. 23 in the doubles rankings with sophomore Victor Cornea.
Three juniors add to Middle Tennessee's veteran presence, as Yannick Born, Christoph Lang and Ettore Zito all return for their third year in Murfreesboro. The 2013-14 Blue Raiders, rounded out by sophomore David Fox and freshman Aaron Jumonville, provide a balance of youth and experience heading into the year.
Lipscomb (Atlantic Sun) and Southern Illinois (MVC) both fell in the semifinals of their respective conference tournaments in the spring, while UAB was ousted in the first round of the C-USA Championship. All three teams were knocked off by the eventual conference champion.
