MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team put together a high-quality effort on Friday, taking eight of nine matches from Southern Illinois in the first day of the Dale Short Shootout at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.

"The energy and overall play was good, and I thought the upperclassmen did a good job of leading," said head men's tennis coach Jimmy Borendame. "I'm looking forward to more of the same type of play the rest of the weekend."

Five of the Blue Raiders' six singles players won in straight sets Friday against the Salukis. At No. 1, Victor Cornea defeated SIU's Jorge Cavero, (6-2, 7-6 (7-0,)) while Cornea teamed with Yannick Born at No. 2 doubles for an 8-4 win over Cavero and Szymon Opieczonek. Born won in straight sets at No. 5 singles, defeating the Salukis' Fillip Aleksic, (6-2, 6-4.)

Freshman Aaron Jumonville's Blue Raider debut was a success, winning (6-2, 6-2) against SIU's Rafael Caudrillero at No. 6 singles. It was the same result for David Fox at No. 3 singles, posting a straight-set (6-2, 6-2) victory over Michal Kianicka.

Fox paired with Christoph Lang to defeat Kianicka and Jonny Rigby - who had the lone Saluki win on the day with a No. 2 singles win over Ettore Zito - in an 8-6 No. 1 doubles decision. Lang was victorious over Opieczonek in No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-4.) Jumonville and Zito defeated Cuadrillero and Aleksic at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
