Raiders open season with five victories at UNLV Invite

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Middle Tennessee put together five victories during the first day of the UNLV Women's Tennis Fall Invitational on Friday at the Frank and Vicki Fertitta Tennis Complex.
MT won one doubles match, while the Raiders picked up four wins in singles competition.
"Right away, we have been able to identify areas that we need to work on as a team," said head coach Shelley Godwin. "Overall, I am pleased with the way we played and expect us to come out tomorrow with an improved urgency to compete for every point."
North Texas' Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer won an 8-2 contest over Irina Constantinide and Jesse Grace. In the fourth flight, Olivia Headford of North Arizona and Southern Illinois' Lauren Hoekstra pulled out an 8-3 contest over MT's Amanda Manns and Alexandra Torres.
The tandem of Flavia Nagyama and Nayara Moraes fell 8-3 to UNLV's Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga.
The Blue Raiders fared well individually with four victories. William, a junior transfer from London, dropped her first set 5-7 to Northern Arizona's Johanna Vang. However, she bounced back with a pair of 6-1 victories to move to 2-0 on the day.
In the second flight, Grace used a straight-set win over Kamilla Galieva (7-6 (5), 6-4) to advance to the next round. The junior Moraes won an easy two-set contest over New Mexico State's Annemieke Witte, 6-2, 7-5.
Middle Tennessee's Nagayama also snatched a win in a pair of sets, knocking off SIU's Korey Love (6-0, 6-3).
The sophomore Constantinide dropped a heartbreaking three-set contest in the third flight, 7-5, 4-6, 3-6, to NMSU's Brittany Collens. Laura Eales of Long Beach State snagged a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sediri, while NMSU's Mia Brandt collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Torres. Also in the seventh flight, Manns fell 4-6, 3-6 to NAU's Headford.
Action at the UNLV Fall Invitational resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. PT with the semifinals round.
