Blue Raiders open C-USA play with a pair of home matches

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team opens Conference USA play this weekend, hosting UAB Friday at 7:05 p.m. and Colorado College Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Hayes Soccer Stadium.
The Blue Raiders (3-3-2) are set to begin their conference schedule Friday evening against UAB (7-2-0), who currently sit atop the league standings. The Blazers only two losses on the season have come at the hands of SEC opponents. They dropped a 5-2 decision to Ole Miss Aug. 25 and a 1-0 loss at Alabama Sept. 15.
UAB has outscored its opponents 25-15 this season. With its 25 goals, the team ranks third in C-USA, while also ranking third in goals per game, averaging 2.78 per contest.
In the Blazers' last outing, they picked up a 3-1 victory at UALR with goals from Kimberly Fincher, Kasey Johnson and Jasmine Kauka. Johnson tallied her second game-winning goal of the season, while goalkeeper Courtnie Northern grabbed two saves to improve to 2-1-0 on the year.
MT holds a 1-0-0 advantage against the Blazers in the all-time series. The Blue Raiders claimed a 2-1 win at UAB Sept. 9, 2010. Sunday's match will be the first meeting between the Blue Raiders and the Tigers.
Colorado College holds a 5-3-0 record this season. The Tigers have recorded three-straight shutouts for a total of five on the season. MT has also recorded three-straight shutouts, amassing five on the year.
Two of the Tigers' three losses this season have been at the hands of ranked opponents. Colorado College fell 2-1 in its season-opener at then-No. 25 Denver Aug. 23 and dropped a 3-1 loss at then-No. 25 Marquette Sept. 8. Since the loss to the Golden Eagles, the Tigers rattled off home victories against Ball State, Texas and Drexel.
Colorado College has outscored its opponents 15-6 this season. Sarah Schweiss leads the team with nine points on the year, netting a team-high four goals to go along with one assist. Kaeli Vandersluis is second on the squad with seven points off of two goals and three assists.
MT has won three-straight contests at home with victories over Tennessee, Tennessee Tech and Alabama A&M. In the Blue Raiders' last outing, they rolled over Alabama A&M 8-0 Sept. 20, scoring seven goals in the opening period.
Tori Hawkins netted one goal, while dishing out three assists in the win over the Bulldogs. She picked up C-USA Offensive Player of the Week honors for her efforts, marking the program's first weekly award from its new conference. Hawkins' four assists on the season put her tied for third in the league statistics.
