Campbell, Dukes and Nieve named NFCA All-America Scholar Athletes

Blue Raiders find success on and off the field

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Niki Campbell, Laura Dukes and Samantha Nieves were named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athletes for their success in the classroom during the 2012-13 academic year.

Campbell played in 49 of the 54 games in 2013, playing primarily from first base she had 296 putouts. Campbell is majoring in Nursing and achieved a 3.84 for the 2012-13 school year.

Dukes was arguably the best hitter that MT had last season, leading the team with a .281 batting average, seven home runs and a .477 slugging percentage. She was second on the team with 19 RBI, only one behind Nina Dever's 20. Dukes is majoring in Organizational Communication, completing last year with a 3.67 GPA.

Nieves was one of two Blue Raiders to start all 54 games last season, Dever being the other. Nieves had a team-high 42 hits to go along with 15 RBI and 136 assists. She is majoring in animal science, accomplishing 3.724 GPA.

"We are fortunate to have ladies of this academic quality at our university," said Head Coach Jeff Breeden. "Congrats to each of these great Blue Raiders!" 

In order to qualify for the award student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA for the entire academic year.
