Moraes remains perfect after first day at Samford Invite

Blue Raiders snatched five wins in Friday's action

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior Nayara Moraes remained unblemished this season with a singles victory, collecting one of Middle Tennessee's five victories at the Samford Invitational on Friday.

MT snagged three wins in singles competition, while the Blue Raiders won two of three doubles competitions at the Samford Tennis Complex. On Friday, Middle Tennessee faced Samford in flighted singles competition and took on UAB in doubles matches.

Moraes improved to 4-0 with a thrilling three-set win over Samford's Jessica Northcutt, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the No. 4 flight.

Moraes, a native of Brazil, would later join freshman Jesse Grace in knocking off UAB's Sarah Witkowski and Paula Castro in a tie-break 8-7 (4).

Grace won her third match this season by collecting a 6-4 7-6 (1) decision over Stephanie N'tcha in the second flight.

Freshman Tiffany William won a two-set contest in the top flight against the Bulldogs' Kristin Lewis (6-4, 6-3). William and teammate Sarah Sediri fell 8-4 to UAB's Rachel Daniell/Carolina Faught in the No. 1 doubles flight.

The freshman Sediri fell to Carita Moolman, 6-1, 6-0, while Yasmeen Ebada knocked off Irina Constantinide 6-4, 6-3 on Friday.

Middle Tennessee senior Flavia Nagayama lost a heart-breaking three-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Samford's Emily Mallory for her first defeat of the season. Nagayama and Constantinide did rebound in doubles with an 8-4 decision over the Blazers' Catherine Ragon and Elaine Simon.

In the No. 7 singles flight, the Bulldogs' Lauren Caballero won 6-1, 6-2 over Alexandra Torres to conclude the opening day of the Samford Invite.

"I am very pleased with the way we came out and competed today," said head coach Shelley Godwin. "We played disciplined tennis and were ready to work from the first point."

On Saturday, MT faces old Sun Belt foe South Alabama in doubles action before taking on C-USA opponent UAB in singles. Results of the match can be found at GoBlueRaiders.com
