Raiders face Blazers in first home C-USA match

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (9-6, 1-1 C-USA) plays its first home match since Sept. 7 when the Blue Raiders host UAB for the first Conference USA match to be played in Alumni Memorial Gym. MT split the opening weekend of C-USA play on the road, defeating Rice in straight sets before dropping a four-set decision at North Texas.

Sophomore Chelsea Ross and freshman Jale Hervey are tied for the team lead in kills per set at 3.13. Sophomore Shelby Anderton leads MT in assists per set with 5.87. Redshirt-junior Kendall Howard has tallied a team-best 4.10 digs per set, while redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson leads MT and is second in Conference USA in blocks per set with 1.22.

Scouting the UAB Blazers
Entering Friday's match at East Carolina, the Blazers sit at 1-1 in C-USA and 12-6 overall. UAB split last weekend at home, defeating Southern Miss on Friday before falling to Tulsa. Both matches went five sets.

Sam Skinner leads the Blazers in kills per set with 4.15, which is good for second in C-USA and 29th nationally. Becca Howard's team-leading 11.13 assists per set also lead C-USA, while Sara Rishell's conference-leading 1.28 blocks per set are good for 47th nationally. Rachel Fairbanks' team-best 4.82 digs per set rank 41st nationally.

Richardson Named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week

Redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23 after recording a stellar .488 hitting percentage at the Mizzou Classic. Richardson hit .562 with 11 kills in a three-set victory over Southeast Missouri on Friday. She hit .500 with five kills in a three-set win over Towson Saturday afternoon before tallying eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage in a three-set loss to the host Tigers. In addition, Richardson posted 1.33 blocks per set on the weekend.

It's a Great Day to be a Blue Raider

Redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson was one of four Middle Tennessee student-athletes to win a Conference USA weekly award on Sept. 23, joining Tori Hawkins (women's soccer offensive player of the week), Reggie Whatley (football offensive player of the week) and Dearco Nolan (football defensive player of the week.)

Speaking Statistically

The Blue Raiders are 65th in the nation in blocks per set (2.48), with redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson 67th (1.22). Richardson is also 30th in the nation in hitting percentage (.407), with both rankings good for second in Conference USA.

Challenging Slate

The Blue Raiders are ranked 82nd in this week's Rich Kern Percentage Index (RKPI). Five of the six teams MT has lost to so far this season have a top-75 RKPI: No. 26 Missouri, No. 27 North Carolina, No. 28 Oklahoma, No. 52 Virginia Tech and No. 62 Missouri State. The Blue Raiders' strength of schedule according to RKPI is 48, which is the toughest in C-USA.

No GPS Needed
Sunday's match will be the fourth UAB has played in 2013 at Alumni Memorial Gym. The Blazers faced North Dakota, Austin Peay and Virginia Tech during the weekend of Sept. 6-7.
