GALLATIN, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee used its offensive fire power to take game two 8-0 against Volunteer State Community College after falling in game one 4-0 to Ole Miss Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders didn't take long to start scoring in game two after being held scoreless in game one. In the second inning, MT jumped out to a 3-0 lead, giving starter Jordyn Fisherback enough room to work with.
Volunteer State responded with two hits in the bottom of the inning, but left both runners on base.
The top of the fifth saw Laura Dukes hit a two-run shot with one out, but MT did not find any more offense until the fifth. After a walk by McKena Miller and a double by Cheyenne Willis, MT had runners on second and third. Aubrey Crowell hit a sacrifice fly to push one more run across.
MT held a 6-0 lead closing out the top of the fifth inning. VSCC gave MT a scare loading the bases with one out, but the Blue Raiders pulled out a 5-2-3 double play.
Middle Tennessee would go on to add two more insurance runs in the seventh inning. Nina Dever smacked a leadoff double and scored on a single by Miller. Crowell notched an RBI of her own after hitting a single to score Miller, closing out the scoring affair for MT.
Fisherback, who finished off game one, pitched three innings of two-hit ball while striking out two. Shelby Stinnett came in relief, closing out the last four innings only giving up two hits, a hit-by-pitch and one walk.
Game one of the two game set was a different scenario as MT took on perennial SEC powerhouse Ole Miss in an exhibition contest that didn't see a score until the third inning. MT had its chances early, leaving three runners on base in the first inning.
The Blue Raiders did not find the base paths in the second inning and left another runner on in the third.
The Rebels took the 1-0 lead after blasting a solo shot to dead center but it was the only damage they could cause. Ole Miss and MT went scoreless in the fourth before the Rebels ripped it open in the fifth, scoring three more runs on three hits with one runner scoring on a fielder's choice to end the inning.
McClure was giving the loss after giving up three hits while striking out two, walking one and giving up one earned run through four.
Fisherback who came in relief, gave up two hits, one walk with two earned runs.
Middle Tennessee will be back in action Saturday Oct. 12 at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. with the second game to follow.
