MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee volleyball team defended home court in the first Conference USA match at Alumni Memorial Gym, downing UAB in four sets on Sunday afternoon. In the win, the Blue Raiders improve to 10-6 and 2-1 in C-USA play, while the Blazers fall to 13-7 and 2-2 in conference action.

Sophomore Chelsea Ross led Middle Tennessee with a double-double of 12 kills and 15 digs, while redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson improved upon her place in the national rankings with a .500 hitting percentage (8-2-12) and six blocks.

UAB took the opening set, 25-20, capitalizing on four blocks and MT's .097 hitting percentage. The Raiders held a slim 10-9 advantage before the Blazers rattled off an 11-5 run to open up a 20-15 lead. A kill by freshman Jale Hervey, followed by three straight UAB attack errors, brought the Blue Raiders to within one before the Blazers regained control and closed out the set.

The second set was a back-and-forth struggle before the Raiders grabbed control late. Trailing 17-16, a pair of Ross kills, an ace by sophomore Shelby Anderton and a UAB attack error gave MT a 20-17 advantage. After a service error pulled UAB to within two, the Raiders rattled off the final five points of the set to win the frame, 25-18, and head to the intermission tied 1-1.

MT won the third set by the same 25-18 score, but in a different fashion, as the Raiders hit .444 (11-3-18) in the set, with Ross tallying two aces and MT taking advantage of six UAB attack errors. The Raiders led throughout the majority of the set, closing out on a 14-7 run.

UAB called timeout early in the fourth set after MT opened up a 7-2 lead. The Raiders would not falter out of the stoppage, opening up a six-point lead three times in the set, including an 18-12 advantage after a Ross kill. The Blazers made things interesting though, pulling to within 22-21. After Anderton fooled the Blazer block with an attack, UAB answered with a kill. Redshirt-junior Monet Marshall came up with a kill on the next point to bring the Blazers to match point at 24-22. UAB would claw back with the next point before redshirt-freshman Jazmyne Johnson wrapped things up with her sixth kill of the match, putting UAB away with a 25-23 fourth set victory.

The Blue Raiders return to action Friday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. when MT hosts UTEP at Alumni Memorial Gym.
