George leads pack at Lady Pirate Intercollegiate

Blue Raiders sit third after 36 holes

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Middle Tennessee women's golf team sits third after the opening day of competition at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate hosted by East Carolina at the Greenville Country Club.

The Blue Raiders shot a 598 on the 6,004-yard par 72 course through the first 36 holes. ETSU leads the 16-team pack, carding a 596, while tournament host ECU is second with a score of 597.

Middle Tennessee recorded a 309 through the first 18 holes, but then managed to post a 289 in the second round of play. The Blue Raiders were led by Avery George, who paces the 90 player field, with a 142 on the day. She carded a 75 in the first round and a 67 in the second for five-under par.

"Through some tough weather, the team stepped up and posted low round of the year at 289 with Avery finishing birdie-birdie to shoot 67," said head coach Chris Adams. "After a tough opening round, they gutted it out and made the most out of the day to be in contention. We have given ourselves a chance to win now. We have to stay focused and take it one shot at a time."

Allie Knight and Emily Williams were second on the team with a 151, tying for 17th overall. Knight shot a 75 and a 76 in the first two rounds, respectively. Williams posted scores of 77 and 74.

Emily Miller recorded a 156 through 36 holes, posting scores of 82 and 74, while Samantha Gotcher carded a 159, shooting 80 and 79.
