IRVING, Texas - Middle Tennessee sophomore Lucy Kapkiai was named Conference USA Athlete of the Week for women's cross country, as announced by the conference office Wednesday.

Kapkiai received the award for her performance at the 5K Greater Louisville Classic Oct. 5, finishing a Middle Tennessee best 13th out of 170 NCAA Division I runners. Her time of 17:49.53 was a season-best time for the Blue Raiders and Kapkiai.

The Classic took place at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky., and included 19 other NCAA Division I teams. E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park has featured numerous cross country championships because of its level of difficult. Previous events include the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships, five NAIA National Cross Country Championships and six of the last seven NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships.

Kapkiai was the last woman runner to receive conference athlete of the week honors for Middle Tennessee, winning the award after finishing 11th at the 2011 Greater Louisville Classic. Her time of 17:20.20 is a personal-best time in a 5K event.

"We are happy to have her back," said Head Coach Dean Hayes. "She is our number one and is very talented. She is working good and has her chance to find out what she can do in Conference USA."

Kapkiai missed the 2012 season due to an injury that kept her out of competition.

Middle Tennessee will be back in action on Oct. 19, returning to Chattanooga, Tenn. to compete in the Front Runner Invitational.
