MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee volleyball team jumped ahead early and finished emphatically, riding efficient hitting to a three-set win over first-place UTSA at Alumni Memorial Gym on Sunday afternoon. In the win, the Blue Raiders improve to 11-7 and 3-2 in Conference USA, while the Roadrunners fall to 13-7 and 5-1 in C-USA play.
Sophomore Chelsea Ross led the Blue Raiders with 14 kills, and was aided by quality performances by redshirt-junior Monet Marshall (9-3-15-.400) and redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson (8-0-13-.615). The nine kills tied a season high for Marshall, while Richardson also tallied four blocks in the match. Sophomore Shelby Anderton led the Blue Raiders with 24 assists in the three-set match.
The opening frame was the most contested set of the match, with UTSA holding an 18-17 lead, prompting an MT timeout. The Raiders answered, scoring the next four points and eight of the final 12 in the set. During that stretch, Ross and Jazmyne Johnson each tallied two kills.
MT opened up the second stanza emphatically, as Ross rattled off three straight kills, Richardson added one, and Anderton provided an ace to put the Blue Raiders up 6-1. UTSA would tally the next three points, but MT then took control, opening up a lead as big as eight at 14-6. The Roadrunners would make it interesting, pulling closer at 22-20 and again at 23-22 before the Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the match after a Johnson kill and UTSA attack error.
The third set was never in doubt, with MT opening up an 8-2 advantage and never looking back. The Raiders would hold a comfortable cushion of 6-8 points throughout the majority of the set, hitting .579 in the frame on their way to a 25-16 decision in the final set.
MT hit .360 for the match, as opposed to a .227 clip for UTSA. The Roadrunners led in blocks (9-7) and digs (27-22) in the match, while the Raiders tallied 44 assists over the three sets.
The Blue Raiders return to action on Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. when MT travels to Ruston, La. for a C-USA match vs. Louisiana Tech.
