MT set for final tune-up before C-USA Championships

Blue Raiders Returns to Chattanooga

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee cross country teams travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to compete in the UTC Front Runner Invitational Saturday, Oct. 19. The Invite will be hosted by Chattanooga at Moccasin Bend, marking the second time MT has competed on the course in 2013.

The Blue Raiders will look to make some final strides at the Front Runner, tuning-up in its last race before for the Conference USA Championships in Denton, Texas Nov. 2. The Invite will feature six other teams in Austin Peay, Bryan College, Lipscomb, Tennessee State, UT Martin and Chattanooga.

MT previously competed at the Moccasin Bend course Sept. 7 in the PowerAde Invitational. The Blue Raiders men's and women's teams finished second and third, respectively. The men were led by the performances of Shadrack Matelong and Eliud Rutto. Matelong finished second with a time of 15:43.26 while Rutto placed fourth, completing the course in 15:45.45.

On the women's side, Jackline Kiprono and Lucy Kapkiai finished fourth and seventh, respectively. Kapkiai's appearance in the PowerAde Invitational was her first in 2013. 

Kapkiai who has returned to her number one status for Coach Dean Hayes' women's team, finished the 2013 Greater Louisville Classic 13th with a time of 17:49.53, a personal-best and season-best time in a 5K race. Her performance earned her C-USA Female Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors.

Kapkiai was also the last female MT runner to win conference runner of the week honors, earning the recognition in 2011 after winning the Front Runner Invitational. The last time the Blue Raiders won the Front Runner was also in 2011, sweeping both the men's and women's races.
