MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee soccer team will take to the road this weekend, playing two more games in Conference USA action against Old Dominion Friday, Oct. 18 and Marshall Sunday, Oct. 20.
The Blue Raiders are coming off a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Louisiana Tech in its annual pink game at Dean A. Hayes Soccer Stadium last Sunday. This weekend's matchups will mark the first time MT has played Old Dominion or Marshall.
Middle Tennessee played a nearly flawless first half against LA Tech Oct. 13, keeping the Lady Techster offense at bay, while creating opportunities of its own. LA Tech managed only two shots in the first half and did not attempt a corner kick. The Blue Raiders took five shots, two of which were on goal.
Early in the second period, LA Tech broke through the MT defense, hitting a shot off the upper-left cross bar, sending Kelsey Brouwer to the left. The ball bounced right back and ended up finding the foot of Rosie Lethbridge, who scored on the open net.
The Blue Raiders will look to move up from their current third-place position in the C-USA East play, sitting tied with UAB and Marshall.
Old Dominion (1-9-2, 1-3-1) has only been able to squeeze out one victory in its first 12 games of the 2013 season, taking a 2-0 victory against East Carolina Oct. 4.
In its lone victory of the season, ODU scored in the 10th minute, when Jessie Klamut received the pass from Jordan Jones, nailing it off the right post and in. The Monarchs added an insurance goal in the 87th minute, when Taylor Smith put one into the back of the net off a free kick.
Klamut and Smith are tied for a team-high two goals. Klamut leads Old Dominion with 29 shots taken, while playing in 11 games. In the net for Old Dominion is Meredith Lenox, who has played in all 12 games, making 44 saves with two shutouts.
On Sunday, Middle Tennessee travels to Huntington, W.Va., to take on Marshall (7-4-2, 2-2-1) for a match of third-place C-USA East Division teams. The Thundering Herd's two C-USA wins are against ECU and Old Dominion by scores of 2-0 and 1-0, respectively.
In Marshall's 2-0 victory against ECU, Myka DeMarco and Lizzy Lemons netted the team's two goals. DeMarco is leading the Herd with four goals and two assists. Erin Simmons and Kristine Culicerto are tied for a team-second best three goals, while Simmons leads Marshall with 33 shots.
The Herd's two losses came against LA Tech Oct 4. and UAB Sept. 29. Against the Lady Techsters, Marshall was shutout, while allowing two goals. Only a week earlier, Marshall lost 1-0 to UAB, surrendering a goal in the 79th minute.
Lizzie Kish has been a staple in goal for the Thundering Herd, starting in all 13 games. Kish has 46 saves with eight shutouts and was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 23.
