Marshall edges MT 2-1 in overtime

The Herd nets golden goal in 100th minute

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Middle Tennessee soccer team (5-6-4, 2-3-2 C-USA) dropped a 2-1 decision at Marshall (8-5-2, 3-3-1 C-USA) Sunday afternoon as the Herd netted the golden goal during the final minute of overtime.

The Blue Raiders had an opportunity to claim the win in overtime, when a Tori Hawkins corner kick resulted in a shot by Kate Loye in the 98th minute, but Loye's shot sailed wide. The Herd took the ball the other direction and Erin Simmons' fired a shot with 50 seconds left in overtime that missed wide. However, Marshall's offensive stand continued, when Brittany Entz netted the golden goal from eight yards out with five seconds left in the 100th minute.

Middle Tennessee got on the board first, when Loye scored her seventh goal of the season early in the 22nd minute. She struck the ball from the right corner and it the left post and trickled in past the Marshall goalkeeper, Lizzie Kish.

MT took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to four first-half saves by goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer.
In the second period, the Marshall offense came out of the break, looking for the equalizer. In the 62nd minute, Alyssa Cathey tied the contest at 1-1 with a header off of a corner kick by teammate Summer Wheatley. The goal was Cathey's first of the season.

The two squads continued to battle throughout the rest of regulation, but to no avail as the teams headed into overtime knotted up at 1-1. The Herd managed to outlast the Blue Raiders in extra minutes, netting the game-winner in the final minute of overtime for the 2-1 victory.

Kish collected the win for Marshall, while Brouwer had the loss to go along with four saves. Kish grabbed a save in each period during regulation for a total of two for the contest.

Marshall outshot Middle Tennessee 19-12 with six shots on goal, compared to MT's three. The Herd also claimed the corner kick contest 9-5.

The Blue Raiders return to action Friday, Oct. 25, hosting North Texas for a 7 p.m. C-USA match.
