TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Middle Tennessee softball team lost two games to the University of Alabama Sunday afternoon by scores of 10-0 and 1-0.
The Blue Raiders held Alabama scoreless through two innings in game one of the doubleheader, but also went down in order through the first three innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Crimson Tide broke the game open, starting off with a leadoff home run deep past the outfield fence. With the bases empty and no outs, Bama dropped in two back-to-back singles to have runners at first and second. The next batter up slapped a double, plating the two base runners.
With no outs and Alabama holding a 3-0 lead, the Tide then rattled off another seven runs. Middle Tennessee pulled an inning ending double play to end the third inning, which Alabama totaled 13 hits and 10 runs.
In the fourth, MT received its first base runner of the game as Cheyenne Willis was given the free pass to first. The next two Middle Tennessee batters went down on a fielder's choice and a strike out, respectively.
Laura Dukes received a walk, giving the Blue Raiders runners at first and second. The thought of a rally ended quickly as the next batter made the third out of the inning, and the last out of the game.
Game two had a much different feel as neither side could find away to score as both team's pitchers threw a masterful game.
Going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Stinnett and MT had yet to give up an Alabama hit. The leadoff hitter slapped a single to left, breaking up Stinnett's best performance of the short fall season.
The Blue Raider defense responded stranding the Tide runner with three straight putouts.
Aubrey Crowell started the sixth off with a leadoff chopper up the middle. Middle Tennessee did not capitalize hitting a popup to center, striking out and flaring out in foul territory to end the inning.
Alabama put a scare into the Blue Raiders, loading the bases with only one out in the bottom of the sixth. MT turned the unusual 1-2-3 double play, getting out of the inning unscathed.
Middle Tennessee would go down in order in the top of the seventh, now hoping to hold Alabama scoreless to force extras.
The Tide had other plans, starting the inning off with a walk, Bama used a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner to second. The next batter up laced a single to the outfield, giving Alabama the walk-off victory.
Middle Tennessee moves to 2-4 through the fall schedule. The Blue Raiders will host Trevecca Nazarene for a doubleheader Oct. 26, starting at 1 p.m. at the Blue Raider Softball Complex.
