George leads MT in first day of Blue Raider Invitational

Raiders sit fifth after two rounds at home tournament

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Sophomore Avery George led the Middle Tennessee women's golf team through the first 36 holes as the team played host to the Blue Raider Invitational Monday at Old Fort Golf Club.

The Blue Raiders are fifth after the first two rounds of play, shooting a 303 in the first set of 18 and 297 in the second round for a total of 600. George paced Middle Tennessee, carding a 146 to tie for fifth in the overall rankings for two-over par. She posted a low round of 72 for MT in the opening round and turned in a 74 in the second.

Southern Illinois leads the 15-team pack with a score of 593 (298-295) for 17-over par, while Jacksonville State (304-292) and Lamar (296-300) are tied for second, tallying 596. Morehead State sits fourth, posting a 599 (304-295). This marks the third-straight year the Blue Raider Invite has been held at the par-72, 6,177-yard course at Old Fort Golf Club.

Middle Tennessee freshman Samantha Gotcher was second on the squad, shooting 150 through 36 holes. She is tied for 18th in the overall field, after recording scores of 77 and 73, respectively, in the first two rounds.

Allie Knight carded a 152 (79-73) on the day for the Blue Raiders, while Emily Williams turned in a score of 154 (77-77). Emily Miller shot a 155 through the first 36 holes for MT with a 77 in the first round and a 78 in the second.

MT had three players compete in the tournament as individuals as Maddie Denton and Lacie York led the eight other unattached golfers with a score of 152 to sit tied for 28th. Denton carded a 78 through the first 18 holes, while posting a 74 in the second round of play. York tallied a 79 in the first round and a 73 in the second set of 18. Haley Cothran also played as an individual for Middle Tennessee, posting a 159 (79-80).

Morehead State's Anna Appert Lund tops the overall leaderboard, carding a 139 for five-under par. She recorded a low round score of the tournament, shooting a 69 in the first round. She followed that, recording a 70 in the second round. Southern Illinois' Xianmei Jin is the only other player who came in under par, turning in a score of 143 (70-73) for one-under par.

The Blue Raider Invitational will conclude Tuesday after a final round of 18 holes, starting with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
