MT weathers elements to take second at Blue Raider Invite

George finishes second overall to lead Raiders

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Despite the rainy, chilly weather Tuesday morning and sitting fifth after the first two rounds of play at the Blue Raider Invitational, the Middle Tennessee women's golf team jumped to second, shooting a 298 in the final round of play at Old Fort Golf Club, while Avery George claimed second-place in the overall field.

The Blue Raiders picked up second-place honors at their home tournament with a score of 898 (303-297-298), one stroke shy of Southern Illinois' winning total of 897 (298-295-304) at the par-72, 6177-yard course. Lamar finished third, carding a 902 (296-300-306), while Morehead State came in fourth with a 904 (304-295-305). Jacksonville State (304-292-311) and South Alabama (298-303-306) tied for fifth place, turning in scores of 907.

George posted a 69 in the third round of play, matching the low round she shot at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Oct. 8. She led Middle Tennessee through 54 holes with a 215 for one-under par, finishing second overall in the 84-player field.

Morehead State's Anna Appert Lund carded a 70 in the third round Tuesday, claiming top honors at the Blue Raider Invite with total of 209 for seven-under par. SIU's Xianmei Jin finished third, shooting 216 for par.

Freshman Samantha Gotcher was second on the team for Middle Tennessee, turning a 76 in the final round for a total of 226 through 54 holes. She finished tied for 14th, while junior Allie Knight posted a 76 in the third round for an overall score of 229. Sophomore Emily Williams was a stroke behind Knight, recording a 230 after shooting a 76 on the day, while classmate Emily Miller registered a 79 in the last round for a total score of 234.

Playing as an individual, MT sophomore Madison Denton carded a 77 in the third round, totaling a 229 to lead all unattached golfers and finish tied for 25th in the overall standings. Freshman Lacie York finished the Blue Raider Invite with a score of 236, after shooting an 84 in the final round of play, while junior Haley Cothran recorded a third round score of 82 for a total of 241.

The Blue Raider Invitational concludes the fall tournament schedule for Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders begin their spring 2014 slate March 3-5, traveling to Miami for the Hurricane Invitational at the Biltmore Golf Club.
