The Truman Bulldogs headed south to open the 2013-14 season with a pair of exhibition games against Conference USA teams. The team from Kirksville, Mo., opens its exhibition slate Sunday 3 p.m., traveling to Southern Miss.

Like Middle Tennessee, Truman will be playing in a new conference this year as the Division II program joined the Great Lakes Valley Conference this summer. The Bulldogs went 10-17 overall in 2012-13, while posting a 7-11 record in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

Truman was picked to finish fifth in the GLVC West Division's preseason poll. The Bulldogs return four starters and eight letterwinners from last season's squad, including its two leadings scorers. Senior forward Mike Carlson paced the Bulldogs in 2012-13, averaging 17.1 points per game, while junior guard Seth Jackson was second on the team with 12.1 points a contest.

The Middle Tennessee men's basketball team returns to the hardwood for the 2013-14 campaign Monday evening with seasoned leaders and fresh faces. MT returns eight players from last year's squad that posted a 28-6 record, including seniors Shawn Jones and Kerry Hammonds II. Jones was named to the C-USA Preseason Players to Watch List, after averaging 8.5 points per game and snagging 5.4 rebounds a contest. Hammonds put up 6.6 points per game and pulled down 3.2 boards an outing.

The Blue Raiders have won conference titles three out of the last four seasons in the Sun Belt Conference and look for similar success moving to C-USA. MT reached the NIT quarterfinals in 2011-12 and followed that with an NCAA First Four appearance in 2012-13.

The 2012-13 campaign marked the ninth winning season for the Blue Raiders under head coach Kermit Davis and fifth in the last six years. Over the last two years, MT boasts a 55-13 combined record for a winning percentage of .808.

In exhibition games, Middle Tennessee is 12-1 during Davis' tenure and 14-1 dating back to the 2001-02 season. The lone exhibition loss for MT came in Davis' first season with the Blue Raiders, dropping an 80-73 decision to Global Sports Nov. 5. Over the last two seasons, MT has won its exhibition games by an average of 42.5 points.
