MURFREESBORO - Middle Tennessee sophomore Kevin Byard was voted the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday as announced by the organization.
Byard set a school-record with his third career interception return for a touchdown in Middle Tennessee's 48-0 victory over FIU. The Lithonia, Ga., native snagged an interception early in the third quarter and ran 51 yards to the end zone to put the Raiders up 31-0. The redshirt sophomore also forced a fumble, broke up a pass and collected a pair of tackles.
Byard ranks second on the squad with 80 tackles and leads the Blue Raiders with four interceptions. He also has five pass breakups and one fumble recovery.
Middle Tennessee limited FIU to an opponent season-low 233 yards and recorded the club's first shutout since 2006. The Blue Raiders have the week off before traveling to Southern Miss on November 23.
