Gipson and Islam named to All-C-USA Academic Team

IRVING, Texas - Autumn Gipson and Rachel Islam have been named to the 2013 All-Conference-USA Academic Team as announced by the conference office Thursday afternoon.
The all-academic teams are comprised of six runners for the men's team and seven for the women's team. The women's teams originally was set to have six runners, but due to a tie for the final spot both runners were named to the team. The nominees had to have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be a regular participant for their teams.
The five other women student-athletes to be named to the C-USA All-Academic team include: Nicole Morgan (Charlotte), Felice Johnson (Southern Miss), Samantha Fish (UTSA), Kate Brown (UAB) and Elinor Kirk (UAB). Kirk is also the 2013 C-USA individual medalist from the C-USA Championship ran Nov. 2 in Denton, Texas.
Gipson, a senior from Oak Ridge, Tenn., has maintained a 4.0 GPA while studying exercise science. She was one of four other student athletes to have a perfect 4.0 GPA, with Johnson, Kirk and Brown being the others. Gipson has also been named to the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 Sun Belt Commissioner's List, which is achieved when a student-athlete maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher for the cumulative year.
Collectively, Gipson has finished as the third-runner for MT this season. Her best finish came at the Front Runner Invitational, placing eighth with a two-mile time of 11:33.14.
Islam, a senior from Barrie, Ontario, has accumulated a 3.811 GPA while studying political science. Like Gipson, she has been named to the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 Sun Belt Commissioner's list. Islam has participated in every race in 2013, with her best finishes coming at the Power Ade Invitational and Front Runner Invitational, placing 17th in both.
Islam and Gipson have also helped the Middle Tennessee women's cross country team reach 14th in the South Regional Rankings, the first time in school history.
The MT women's cross country squad will take travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to compete against 45 other teams in the South Regional tomorrow starting at 11:15 a.m.
