MT falls to FIU in five sets at C-USA Volleyball Championship

Raiders close inaugural season in C-USA at 17-13

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee women's volleyball team fell to FIU in five sets in the first round of the Conference USA Volleyball Championship at Alumni Memorial Gym. In the defeat, the Blue Raiders finish their inaugural season in C-USA at 17-13. The Panthers, at 13-16, will advance to face Tulsa on Friday at 5 p.m.

Sophomore Chelsea Ross led MT with her 12th double-double of the year, recording 18 kills and 13 digs. Redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson added 10 kills and redshirt-freshman Jazmyne Johnson tallied a career-high nine.

The Blue Raiders won the first set handily at 25-18. MT outhit FIU .344-.241 in the opening frame. The two teams battled past 25 in the second, with the Blue Raiders outlasting the Panthers for a 29-27 victory, heading to intermission with a 2-0 advantage.

FIU answered out of the 10-minute break, holding MT to a .121 hitting percentage in a 25-20 Panther victory. The Blue Raiders came up with six blocks in the fourth set, but were plagued by a -.024 hitting percentage in the frame, falling 25-22 to force a fifth set.

It was the Panther block that proved critical in the final set, as FIU tallied four points off the block. The Blue Raiders held an 8-7 lead before the Panthers ran off a 7-1 string to bring MT to match point at 14-9. The Raiders fought back to 14-11 before FIU closed the door on a kill to advance to the Conference USA Volleyball Championship quarterfinals.
