Byard tabbed TSWA Defensive Player of Week

MURFREESBORO - Middle Tennessee safety Kevin Byard was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the organization on Monday. It marks the second honor for Byard this season as he also won the award on Nov. 12.
Byard registered eight tackles and returned an interception 51 yards for a touchdown in the Blue Raiders 42-21 win at Southern Miss. The redshirt sophomore put Middle Tennessee ahead for good with his fourth career interception return for a touchdown and second this season, both school records.
The Lithonia, Ga., native now has 326 career interception return yards, breaking the previous school record of 286 held by James Griffin (1979-82). The all-time NCAA mark is 501 yards set by Florida State's Terrell Buckley.
Middle Tennessee ends the regular season Saturday with a home game against UTEP at 2:45 p.m.
