MT adds Matheson for spring 2014
New Zealander to join Blue Raiders in JanuaryDecember 18, 2013 · @MTAthletics
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee head men's tennis coach Jimmy Borendame has announced the addition of Sam Matheson for the spring 2014 semester.
The Tauranga, New Zealand native joins the Blue Raiders after graduating from Te Kura Correspondence School in 2013. Matheson was ranked as high as No. 439 in the world by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), appearing in the ITF singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals. Matheson was ranked in the top-three in New Zealand as an 18-year old, and advanced to the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals at nationals at 14, 16 and 18 years old.
"Sam is a key addition for us in January 2014," said Borendame. "He brings a lot to the table because his game is very well rounded, has a great attitude, and moves extremely well. His tennis game has only begun to scratch the surface this past summer and I think he will be another diamond in the rough for us. In New Zealand, he has only had a few tough practice partners over the past six months and his game is ripe to explode from training with us and with the tough matches he will get this spring."
"I anticipate Sam being a tough player around 4-6 in the lineup at first, but think he can work his way up even higher this spring," Borendame added.
The Blue Raiders open the spring season on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Nashboro Village, squaring off with Chattanooga (10 a.m.) and Murray State (4 p.m.).
