MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's and women's track & field teams will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the UAB Blazer Invite Friday and Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Blazer Invite will be the first meet this season that Middle Tennessee has traveled out of Tennessee after previously competing at Vanderbilt, Tennessee State and hosting the Christmas Invitational.
The meet schedule will be broken down between the two days, with four prelim races taking place Friday with finals on Saturday. A total of 14 separate running events will be held Friday with six field events to follow. On Saturday, 18 running events are scheduled, which include the 60-meter hurdle and 60-meter dash finals. Saturday will feature six field events spread throughout the day and concluded with the women's high jump at 1:30 p.m.
Middle Tennessee will bring its entire team to Birmingham for the first time, after only bring a select few field athletes last year.
The field for the Blazer Invite will pose a challenging task for the Blue Raiders, with a plethora of teams competing, which include: Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Memphis, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.
"The biggest thing is to get familiar with the facilities because it is where the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be," said Head Coach Dean Hayes. "I have never been in the facilities and am excited to see what it looks like."
Cordairo Golden will look to continue his winning ways in the jumps after winning the long jump and triple jump at the Edward S. Temple Classic last Saturday. Golden, who has won the triple jump in all three meets this season, set his season-best mark of 15.74 meters at the Music City Challenge Dec. 3.
Emmanuel Tugumisirize sprinted his way to the 200-meter crown at last Saturday's meet with a time of 22.03. At the Christmas Invite, Tugumisirize set a personal-best in the 400-meter with a time of 47.33 and will compete in the event at UAB.
For the women's squad, Pershawna Williams and Barbara Vilson will take their high jump skills to CrossPlex after each setting a new personal-best 1.73 meters at the Edward S. Temples Classic. New addition, Rhema Cheruiyot will run her second and third collegiate races in the 1,000-meter and 5,000-meter. Cheruiyot won the 3,000-meter at the Temple Classic with a time of 10:37.19.
Schedule of events with times is attached with results to be posted daily to GoBlueRaiders.com.
