BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Middle Tennessee men's and women's track & field teams closed out the second day of the Blazer Invite with six top-five finishes.

The men's team finished with four runners in the top-five while the women's squad added two more.
"I was very pleased with both days and we had some good performances," said Head Coach Dean Hayes. "We got to see what it was like and what the atmosphere was like."

The lone Blue Raider to take home a first-place finish on the second day of the Blazer Invite was Emmanuel Tugumisirize in the 400-meter with a time of 47.36 seconds. Tugumisirize narrowly missed his best time in the dash by 0.03 seconds. The 47.33 mark was set at the Christmas Invitational Dec. 7, 2013.

"Emmanuel [Tugumisirize] and Eliud Rutto were the stars of the show," Hayes said. "Rutto won the 1,000-meter last night and got second in the mile today. Emmanuel ran a great 400 and he ran a great anchor on our relay too."

Running mates Shadrack Matelong and Eliud Rutto each had a second place finish for the Blue Raiders in the 3,000-meter and one-mile, respectively. Rutto ran the mile in 4:12.22 while Matelong paced himself to an 8:33.02 time in the 3,000. Junior Cadet rounded out the top-five finishers for the men with a third-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. Cadet set a new personal-best time of 8.10 in the event, besting his previous time of 8.14 set at the Music City Challenge Dec. 3 2013.

Rhema Cheruiyot added her third top-five finish of the season and first in the 5,000-meter with a time of 18:27.52. Cheruiyot also had a top-five finish in the 1,000-meter yesterday along with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter at the Edward S. Temple Classic.

Rachel Islam finished in fifth in the 800-meter with a time of 2:13.88 and missed her previous best mark of 2:13.86 set at the Christmas Invite this year. Jackline Kiprono finished off a good weekend with a sixth-place finish in the mile run. Her time of 5:05.84 set a new personal-best for the freshman, eclipsing her 5:08.89 time set this season.

Middle Tennessee will be back in action next Saturday at Auburn.
