MT hits the road for pair of matches in Birmingham

Blue Raiders take on Samford Friday, UAB on Saturday

Middle Tennessee women's tennis heads south to Birmingham for a pair of matches with Samford and UAB this weekend. The Blue Raiders play Samford in a 4 p.m. contest on Friday before taking on UAB in a 1 p.m. match Saturday.

The Blue Raiders (1-0) opened the season with a 4-3 victory over Evansville. The Raiders swept all three doubles contests before winning three more singles sessions to claim the match. Tiffany William, Flavia Nagayama and Nayara Moraes went unblemished in their matches last week.

MT is looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2011 campaign. Samford and the Blue Raiders meet for the eighth time in program history. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 7-0 shutout of Kennesaw State last Saturday. Last season, MT pulled out a narrow 4-3 victory over the in Murfreesboro. Samford's Stephanie N'tcha ranks 72nd in the latest ITA rankings.

Now as foes in Conference USA, the Blue Raiders and Blazers meet for the first time as league opponents. MT owns the all-time series that began in 1983, 13-10. Last season in Murfreesboro, the Blue Raiders also won a narrow 4-3 contest over the Blazers. MT has won four consecutive games in the series. 

UAB is 1-1 this season with a 6-1 win over Kennesaw State and a 4-1 defeat at Florida State. Amy Lowther leads the Blazers with a 2-0 mark in singles play this season. 

"This weekend we are playing two very solid teams in Samford and UAB," noted head coach Shelley Godwin. "Both of these matches will be good tests for our team and help prepare us for the rest of the season."
