Surviving Cancer: Brenda Wilson's story
Recent survivor encourages routine checkupFebruary 5, 2014 · @MTAthletics
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - In honor of MT Women's Basketball's Play 4Kay Power of Pink game on Saturday, Feb. 8, GoBlueRaiders.com is highlighting a few Blue Raider supporters that have survived their battle with cancer.
Today's special feature highlights Blue Raider fan Brenda Wilson, who is in the final stages of battling Stage IA breast cancer.
Wilson was first diagnosed last November in a yearly mammogram. She didn't expect to find anything wrong in something that had become a routine.
"It was supposed to be somebody else besides myself," Wilson said. "I was very overwhelmed. I was expecting nothing. The radiologist held my hand and told me it had the markings of cancer."
Soon after her diagnosis, Wilson had surgery on Nov. 14, 2013 at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital. She has completed her radiation treatment and is currently taking cancer medication Tamoxifen.
Although she is still in the final stages of her cancer battle. Wilson encourages everyone to get their mammogram, as early detection becomes a lifesaver for many each year.
"Tell everybody to get their routine mammogram," said Wilson. "Because I think that everybody thinks it's not going to be them. That's the reason this event is so special. It's going to be somebody in your church family or somebody else's relative. It's not going to be you. I hope this event can make more people aware."
No. 21 Middle Tennessee returns to the Murphy Center this Saturday for the annual Play 4Kay Power of Pink game against Rice at 2 p.m. All fans that wear pink to the game can purchase a discounted $5 ticket. The Blue Raiders will auction all 15 of the exclusive game-worn pink uniforms immediately following the game. Proceeds from the auctioned jerseys will be split between the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and Saint Thomas Rutherford Foundation's Power of Pink fund. Fans can also donate online to Play 4Kay by clicking here.
Prior to the game, select cancer survivors will be introduced and stand with the Blue Raiders during the national anthem. Thanks to local sponsors, special Play 4Kay t-shirts will be thrown out in the stands throughout the game. After the contest, the entire 2013-14 Blue Raider squad will sign autographs on the main floor of Murphy Center.
