MT concludes Cupid Classic

Blue Raiders finish weekend at Iowa State Classic tomorrow

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Middle Tennessee men's and women's track & field teams used the Cupid Classic to gain one last feeling for the Birmingham CrossPlex before the Conference USA Indoor Championships Feb. 28-March 1. 

The women's squad was highlighted by five top five finishes, including a second and fourth place finish in the high jump. Pershawna Williams placed second while Barbara Vilson finished fourth, with both clearing 1.70 meters and Williams clearing it on her first attempt. Atarah Abdullah-Muhammad finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.98 meters. India Hammond, who competed at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, placed third in the long jump with a distance of 5.73-meters.

In addition to the field athletes, Lucy Kapkiai took home first place in the 3,000-meter with a time of 10:00.65 while Christal Wilson finished third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.70).

The men's team added five more top five finishers for Middle Tennessee. Cordairo Golden finished fifth (7.06m) in the long jump at Iowa State while Vincent Okot placed 11th (6.75m).

Demetrius Shelton helped the Blue Raiders at the Cupid Classic by placing fifth in the 200-meter with a time of 21.90 seconds. Shelton also finished eighth overall and fifth collegiality in the 400-meter (49.24). Along with Shelton, Shadrack Matelong placed fourth in the 3,000-meter in a time of 8:33.20.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Geoffrey Akena, Demetrius Shelton, Brandon Messick and Asa Bowman placed fifth with a time of 3:19.72.

Rounding out the top performers for MT in Birmingham was Kenneth Gilstrap and Tahir Walsh, who placed sixth and seventh in the 60-meter dash with times of 6.85 and 6.88, respectively.

The Blue Raiders will conclude this weekend's events at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa tomorrow.
