KENNESAW, Ga. - The Middle Tennessee baseball team fell to Kennesaw State, 5-1, to split an opening-day doubleheader on Saturday at Stillwell Stadium. The Blue Raiders and Owls both sit at 1-1 after MT took the first game, 11-10.
Down by four in the ninth, MT was able to bring the tying run to the plate on a rally created by the bottom of the order. Junior Jared Allen led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second on a one-out walk by senior Jake Ellison. An infield fly that was subsequently bobbled and dropped gave the Owls the second out of the inning before junior Dustin Delgado loaded the bases on a walk. Senior Ryan Stephens grounded out to second to end the threat and the game.
Junior Johnathan Frebis was saddled with the loss, as he gave up four runs over five innings of work. The Owls jumped ahead courtesy of a three-run first and never trailed in the contest, adding a single run in both the fourth and sixth innings.
KSU starter Travis Bergen went five innings to claim the victory, surrendering three hits and no runs.
The Blue Raiders and Owls will close out the series with a noon CT start on Sunday at Stillwell Stadium. Garrett Ring will start for MT, opposed by Nathan Harsh.
