MOBILE - Middle Tennessee men's golf opened the spring season on a high note by finishing fifth at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate where 10 of the 15 teams were ranked in the top 100 nationally. The Blue Raiders had a 54-hole total of 870 on the par 72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.

The Blue Raiders had consecutive rounds of 290-290-290 and had three different players shoot under par. The solid showing also saw MT finish ahead of four teams ranked higher in the polls.

No. 27 Auburn won the event with an 858 score while No. 36 Kentucky came in second with an 864. Memphis finished third followed by Georgia State and Middle Tennessee.

"I am really proud of our effort this week," added Head Coach Whit Turnbow. "It validates all the hard work these guys put in over the winter during very difficult weather conditions.

"We picked up four nice wins over teams ranked ahead of us, including a huge 10-shot victory over No. 28 Wake Forest. I thought (Andrew) Cho and (Lucas) Armstrong played consistent, then you add in three rounds under par from different guys and you have a great team effort. This is what NCAA caliber teams look like."

Junior Payne Denman led the way for the Raiders by finishing tied for third overall with a score of 213. Denman had rounds of 68-72-73 and totaled 11 birdies while shooting 4-under on the par 5s.

Senior Jordan Jennings continued his solid play by tying for 14th with rounds of 75-69-74. Jennings had seven birdies and an eagle while playing his final 38 holes at 2-under par.

Junior Brett Patterson tied for 20th overall with a 220 total. Patterson led the Blue Raiders in the final round with a 2-under par 70 that included an eagle on the par 5, 559-yard 13th. On his second shot, Patterson hit a 3-wood 260 yards to three-feet to set up his short eagle putt.

Lucas Armstrong tied for 38th with a 223, while Andrew Cho shot a 224 to tie for 46th.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action March 10-11 at the General Hacker Invitational in Murrells Inlet, SC.
