Radford offense out muscles the Blue Raiders 6-3

Dukes totaled three RBI

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Despite three RBI from Laura Dukes, the Middle Tennessee (4-8) softball team dropped its second contest of the day to Radford (2-1) 6-3.

Senior Jordyn Fisherback finished game one against Campbell earlier today and received the start against the Highlanders. Fisherback made it through 2.2 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs with three earned. Caitlin McClure followed Fisherback and surrendered two runs in 1.0 inning, while Stinnett closed out the final 2.1 innings, holding Radford scoreless and hitless.

To start the contest against the Highlanders, MT scored two runs in the top of the first. LaRi Mitchell singled through the left side with one out and with a little help from a RU error, Samantha Nieves reached first. Nieves proceeded to steal second, setting up runners on second and third with Dukes coming to the plate. Dukes tallied her first two RBI of the day on a double to left center.

Radford responded in the bottom of the first, hitting back-to-back home runs by Becky Mantel and Julie Gardner to tie the score at 2-all. RU added another run in the bottom of the second to give RU a 3-2 advantage heading into the top of the third.

With two outs, Nieves doubled to left center to give MT its first base runner of the inning. Dukes then slapped a double on a 2-2 count to left field for her third RBI.

Radford scored again in the bottom of the third on a triple to center field, capturing the lead for good. RU added two more runs on back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the fifth by Jessie Hutchins and Gardner to create the 6-3 final score.

Mitchell and Dukes each tallied two hits, finishing 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively.

Middle Tennessee continues play tomorrow against Ohio at 10 a.m.
