Blue Raiders close tournament play at Eagle Classic

Middle Tennessee starts play Friday at 12:30 p.m.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Fresh off a split of the doubleheader with Samford Feb. 25, the Middle Tennessee softball team (5-12) heads to Statesboro, Ga., to play in the Eagle Classic Feb. 28-March 1. The Blue Raiders are scheduled to play three teams at the tournament, playing Troy Feb. 28 and March 2, Tennessee State March 1 and 2 and host Georgia Southern March 1.

Middle Tennessee beat the visiting Samford Bulldogs 6-1 in the second game of the doubleheader Tuesday. Senior pitcher Jordyn Fisherback tossed 7.0 innings, while allowing only one earned run and six hits with one strikeout. The Blue Raiders forced the Bulldogs' pitching staff to nine walks in the second game, including two by LaRi Mitchell, Cheyenne Willis and Austyn Whaley. Whaley and McKena Miller each tallied two RBI in the victory.

In an extra inning affair, the Bulldogs captured game one after a three-run home run by SU's Hannah Taylor in the top of the ninth. MT rallied to put two more runs across but ultimately fell in game one 9-7. Shelby Stinnett received the loss pitching the final 2.2 innings and allowed five runs with three earned. Caitlin McClure started the contest and totaled 6.1 innings, while surrendering four earned runs with two strikeouts.

Nina Dever finished the day 3-for-8 with three doubles and one RBI. Laura Dukes went 1-for-5 with a home run and three walks. Samantha Nieves tallied two hits with a home run, while Mitchell received four walks through the two games.
