Eight Blue Raiders advance to C-USA Indoor Finals

Five earn Middle Tennessee team points

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Eight Middle Tennessee runners advanced past the preliminaries and five athletes earned the Blue Raiders team points on the first day of the Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

India Hammond used her last leap in the long jump to earn a third place finish (5.91-meters), while Pershawna Williams placed eighth (5.76m). Lucy Kapkiai and Jackline Kiprono finished third and seventh with times of 16:49.17 and 17:10. 89 in the 5,000-meter, respectively. Kapkiai broke her own school record in the 5,000 as she previously set the time in 2012 (17:04.70). Shadrack Matelong was the lone male athlete to earn points for the Blue Raiders, placing fifth in the 5,000-meter (14.41.31).

Eliud Rutto, Emmanuel Tugumisrize and Junior Cadet each finished first in the prelims of their events. Rutto ran the 800-meter (1:50.40), Tugumisirize the 400-meter (47.27) and Cadet the 60-meter hurdles (8.097).

Tugumisirize added an eighth place finish in the 200-meter (21.763) behind teammates Tahir Walsh (21.61) and Demitrius Shelton (21.76), who finished third and seventh. Walsh was the lone male to place in the 60-meter dash, finishing fourth with a time of 6.86 seconds.

In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Christal Wilson and Hammond secured a sport in tomorrow's finals with Wilson finishing sixth (8:47) and Hammond eighth (8.55). Freshman Shaina Johnson (56.632) posted an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter to round out the competitors for day one.

Tomorrow concludes the C-USA Indoor Track & Field Championships with field events starting at noon and running events at 2 p.m.
