Blue Raiders lose to TSU 7-1, Georgia Southern 4-1

STATESBORO, Ga. - Middle Tennessee (5-15) lost both its games Saturday after scoring the opening run in the first inning, dropping a 7-1 decision to Tennessee State (5-13) and host Georgia Southern (12-5) in the second day of the Eagle Classic.
Kayla Toney finished the day with four hits, including two doubles and the lone RBI between the two games. LaRi Mitchell and Laura Dukes each went 1-for-4 at the plate with two walks. Mitchell finished a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts, while freshman Marinna Shadley added a hit (1-for-6).
Against Tennessee State Middle Tennessee held the 1-0 advantage two batters into the game. Mitchell started the game with a walk and stole second. Kayla Toney proceeded to hit a single to center, scoring Mitchell.
Jordyn Fisherback (2-5) received the start in game one, holding the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the first but surrendered four runs in the next 1.1 innings to TSU. Tennessee State scored two runs in back-to-back-to-back innings for a commanding 6-1 lead heading into the fifth inning. Middle Tennessee went down 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth and Tennessee State scored one more in the bottom half.
Game two was deja-vu for the Blue Raiders as Mitchell started the game with a leadoff walk and stole second. Toney singled to third base and Mitchell advanced to third on the throw. On a double steal attempt, Toney was caught stealing, which allowed Mitchell to score.
To start the bottom of the second, Georgia Southern tacked on one run to tie the game between the Blue Raiders and Eagles. Two innings later in the fourth inning GSU's Kortney Thomas broke the tie game with a leadoff solo shot to left center. Shelby Stinnett pitched a scoreless third but started the fifth with a walk and allowed a two-run shot to Breanna McLendon over the left field fence for the 4-1 final.
Stinnett (1-7) pitched the complete 6.0 innings for the Blue Raiders, while allowing four runs on only four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Middle Tennessee starts the last day of the Eagle Classic against Troy at 9 a.m. before concluding play against Tennessee State at 11 a.m.
