Toney finishes third straight game 2-for-3

STATESBORO, Ga. - Middle Tennessee (5-16) lost its second game to Troy (9-9-2) 5-2 on the final day of the Eagle Classic Sunday.

Kayla Toney finished 2-for-3 for the third straight game at the Eagle Classic, which includes an RBI single in the fifth inning. Nina Dever went 1-for-3 but provided a double in the second inning that scored Austyn Whaley from second for the first Middle Tennessee run of the day. Samantha Nieves (1-for-3) and Marinna Shadley (1-for-2) added the other two hits for the Blue Raiders, who totaled five hits on the day to Troy's four.

The Trojans scored one run in the first and Troy's Becca Hartley lifted a two-run shot to left to command the 3-0 lead over the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee scored one run in the bottom of the second on the Dever double and another in the fifth on Toney's single to right, which closed the gap to 3-2.

Both sides went scoreless in the sixth and Troy's Michelle Phelps hit a two-run home run in the seventh to provide the final 5-2 score. Middle Tennessee proceeded to go down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the seventh to close out the first game Sunday.

Caitlin McClure (2-4) pitched the full 7.0 innings and held the Trojans to four hits, but surrendered two game-deciding home runs and five walks. McClure also tossed four strikeouts, which ties her season-high set against Kennesaw State Feb. 7 and Florida A&M Feb. 16.

Troy's Jaycee Affeldt earned the win after pitching the complete game with nine strikeouts, three walks and one earned run.

Middle Tennessee concludes play at the Eagle Classic against Tennessee State in the following game at 11 a.m.
