CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The Middle Tennessee women's golf team opened the spring slate at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by Miami Monday as sophomore Avery George is tied for second after the opening round of play at the Biltmore Golf Course, while the Blue Raiders are ninth in the team standings.

George is one stroke back, carding a 69 at the par-71, 6,092-yard course just a few miles from the University of Miami campus. She is tied with No. 25 Iowa State's Sasikarn On-lam and just behind No. 30 Miami's Daniela Darquea, who shot a 68 for three-under par.

"It was a great day to start our first spring tournament, sunny and 85-degrees," said MT head coach Chris Adams. "Avery (George) played great to be one shot off the lead and Allie (Knight) finished with an eagle after hitting it to 16-feet from 243 yards out to post a strong 73. We just have to work out the kinks with the other three players so we can move up."

MT junior Allie Knight was second on the team, posting a 73. She is tied for 24th in the 96-player field. Sophomore Maddie Denton finished the day tied for 71st, carding a 79. Redshirt-sophomore Emily Miller and sophomore Emily Williams are tied for 77th after the first set of 18, each shooting an 80.

"The field is pretty strong with several top 50 teams and three in the top 30, but we need to have a strong showing in these kind of events," Adams said. We have two more days and the forecast is the same."

No. 30 Miami Hurricanes combined to shoot a 284 in round one, putting them one shot ahead of No. 25 Iowa State (285). Campbell (289) and Kennesaw State (289) are tied for third, while East Carolina (290) and Northwestern (290) round out the top five in the 17-team field. The Blue Raiders are currently ninth with a team score of 301.

The second round of play at the Hurricane Invitational will continue Tuesday with a shotgun start off No. 1 and No. 10 at 7:30 a.m. The final round of play on Wednesday will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
