BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Middle Tennessee baseball team scored two runs in the ninth, and held off a UAB comeback in the bottom of the frame, en route to a 4-3 win at Regions Field on Friday night in MT's first Conference USA game. In the win, the Blue Raiders improve to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in C-USA, while UAB falls to 11-3 and 0-1 in conference play.
Junior C Michael Adkins hit a one-out sac fly in the ninth, scoring senior 1B Trent Miller to give MT a 3-2 lead before the Raiders scored an insurance run on a wild pitch. It would prove to be pivotal, as UAB got one back in the ninth before the Blue Raiders got out of the inning and the ballgame with a victory.
Senior LHP Zac Curtis went 7 2/3 innings for MT, getting a no-decision despite surrendering just two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out 10, matching a career-high.
UAB struck first on an RBI groundout in the second before junior SS Dustin Delgado tied the game the following half-inning on an RBI groundout of his own, scoring junior 2B Austin Bryant to knot the game at 1-1.
With the game tied 2-2 in the ninth, Miller led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second with one out on a balk. After senior CF Ryan Stephens was hit by a pitch, the runners advanced on a wild pitch.
Adkins then came to the plate and lifted a ball to right field, and Miller tagged, sliding head-first into home just ahead of the tag to take a 3-2 lead. Stephens would add an insurance run on a wild pitch.
UAB would put the first two runners on in the ninth before senior RHP Paul Mittura induced a ground ball double play to second to get the first two outs of the inning. A pinch-hit RBI single by UAB's Sam Kelley cut it to 4-3 before Mittura got another ground ball to end the game.
Senior LHP Cody Tollison picked up the win in relief to move to 1-0. UAB's Cory Eller was charged with the loss. Mittura picked up his fourth save of the year.
The Blue Raiders and Blazers square off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Regions Field.
