Raiders fall to UAB, 6-4

LaRue, Bryant with two-hit games for MT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Middle Tennessee baseball team fell to UAB, 6-4, on Saturday afternoon at Regions Field. In the defeat, the Blue Raiders fall to 5-8 and 1-1 in C-USA, while UAB improves to 12-3 and 1-1 in conference play.

Junior 2B Austin Bryant and senior 3B Hank LaRue each had two hits for the Blue Raiders, who drew 12 walks in the contest. Junior DH Jake Ingold provided a spark off the bench for the MT offense, recording a sac fly, a walk and a run scored in two plate appearances after entering as a pinch-hitter in the sixth.

The Blue Raiders got on the board first with a run in the top of the first. Junior SS Dustin Delgado walked and advanced to second on a single up the middle by LaRue. Senior 1B Trent Miller then came to the plate, and ripped a double down the left field line to give MT a 1-0 lead.

UAB tied the game in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk and then took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on two more walks. The Blazers would then open up a 6-1 lead on a three-run double into the left field corner.

MT got two back in the sixth on an RBI single by junior C Michael Adkins and a pinch-hit sac fly by Ingold.

The Raiders would rally in the ninth, as Bryant doubled to right, scoring Ingold. Delgado reached on a hit by pitch and LaRue walked after running the count full before UAB got the final out on a strikeout for the 6-4 victory.

Freshman RHP Will Small was charged with the loss in relief, falling to 0-1. Thomas Lowery picked up the win for UAB, while Adam Lau entered with men on in the ninth to close the door for the save.

Middle Tennessee and UAB close out their three-game series with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday at Regions Field.
