Hammond highlights first day of Alabama Relays

Blue Raiders started first day of the 2014 outdoor season in Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, ALA. - Ten Middle Tennessee athletes or teams placed in the top 10 on the first day of the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Friday.

"We competed to get use to being outside, and it takes a meet or two to get adjusted to the outdoor environment," said Head Coach Dean Hayes. "For the first day of the outdoor season, the weather was good. It was a perfect to start the day and a little chilly at night for the distance runners, which is great."

India Hammond highlighted the group of athletes competing at Alabama, capturing a first place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 12.68-meters. The women's 800-meter relay team of Sheniece Daphness, Chrystal Gray, Chrystal Wilson and Shaina Johnson tallied a fourth place finish with a time of 1:38.75, with Daphness adding another fourth place finish in the women's 100-meter dash (12.09). In the 1,600-meter sprint medley, Daphness, Wilson, Johnson and Rachel Islam notched a fifth place finish (4:06.11).

In the 400-meter, two Blue Raiders placed in the top 10 with Johnson finishing sixth (56.89) and Gray eighth (57.66). Freshman Rhema Cheruiyot added an eighth place finish in the 5,000-meter run (17:27.91).

The men's 1,600-meter relay team of Demetrius Shelton, Andre Hamilton, James Messick and Asa Bowman placed third with a time of 3:27.41. Eliud Rutto and Hillary Rono added a seventh and 10th place finish in the 1,500-meter run with times of 3:50.94 and 3:52.47, respectively. Shadrack Matelong tallied a fourth place finish in the 5,000-meter run (14:42.69), while Vincent Okot leaped 14.47-meters to a fourth place finish in the triple jump.
