IRVING, Texas - Lucy Kapkiai has been named Conference USA Female Track Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office today.
Kapkiai broke her own Middle Tennessee outdoor record in the 10,000-meter at the Raleigh Relays March 28, while finishing fifth and posting a time of 35:04.76. She bested her previous time of 35:47.01, which she set at the Sea Ray Relays April 13, 2013. Kapkiai ranks third in the NCAA and first in C-USA in the 10,000, and is behind Virginia Tech's Sarah Rapp (34:26.11) and Michigan States Melanie Brender (34:32.10) in the NCAA rankings.
"It will give her some confidence," said Head Coach Dean Hayes. "She has previously battled through injuries and it shows that she is getting back into shape. Her performance at Raleigh and the award should give her confidence to perform like she can and has in the past."
The C-USA designation is the first in track for the Eldoret, Kenya native, who previously earned C-USA Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors Oct. 9, 2013 and Sun Belt honors Oct. 15, 2011.
Middle Tennessee track & field will compete again at the Tiger Track Classic, which is hosted by Auburn April 4-5 in Auburn, Ala.
